From The Heart of Hayden’s Dad,

Even before Hayden was born, we didn’t know just what his name would be but we knew what his initials would be. Carrying on the tradition in the Sage family, with the initials of H.E.S.

Carrying on the initials was just the beginning.  Hayden proudly walked in some very large shoes passed down in the Sage name. Like all the Sage’s before, Hayden started his fishing passion while still in diapers practicing casting the fishing pole in the yard then taking those skills to the lake.  Then when Hayden’s diaper wearing sister, Alyssa was ready to go fishing, we were quite the Trio, Dad, Hayden & Alyssa packed into a small tent geared up to fish all weekend.  One of the most memorable camping/fishing trips for me was one early April trip to Lake McConaghuay.   When we arrived at the beach it was dark, raining and very windy.  While young Hayden and Alyssa stayed in the car, I pitched the tent, which was an adventure in its self.  Dispite wearing coveralls and snow suits all weekend we managed to fish and enjoy the entire trip.  Hayden and Alyssa enjoyed many fishing trips with their grandpa and grandma Sage fishing and boating on the Missouri river, catching big catfish.  Hayden was especially proud to have his name on his jugs when setting out jugs in the lake and then going out and pulling in the big cats.

Fishing/Camping wasn’t the only outdoor sport he inherited from the Sages before him.  Hunting was Huge!  There is nothing more exciting for a Dad than to see his son take his first pheasant, first goose, duck, turkey and deer.  We spent many hours and days deer hunting during the rifle season, but during the muzzleloader season we had the entire month of December to hunt and we would use the entire month.  No matter who was hunting with us, Dad, sister Alyssa, Brothers, Grandpa, uncle Perry, uncle Ben or our Best Buddy Kurt, we all knew what Hayden would be doing in the pickup, SLEEPING.  I think Hayden got his best sleep from the time we left the driveway until we would say, “Hayden, wake up, we are getting out to hunt this area”.   Being well rested, he would hunt hard, walking the hills and draws and never get tired.  Hayden didn’t just love the sport of hunting, he was an excellent marksman.  Before going on our first Father/Son pheasant hunt we went out to practice on some blue rocks.  I still remember the number of clays he hit, 11 clays hit out of the first 13 thrown.  Hayden was also very sharp with a rifle.  Hayden especially enjoyed shooting muzzleloaders at the Camp Clarke Raiders shooting range near Bridgeport Nebraska.  He loved the fun atmosphere and competitive  muzzleloader shooting with our CCR Friends.

As much as Hayden loved the family traditions of fishing and hunting, there was one thing he love so much more, and that is Family, especially his sister and brothers. Alyssa probably knew and understood Hayden better than anyone, and she new just what buttons to push and at just the right times.  Those two did everything together growing up from going to church to getting into trouble, from hunting to fishing.  Hayden had a very special bond with sister Alyssa.  He also had a special bond with his brothers, Kyle, Kendall and Justin.  Kyle just recently shared some stories with me that he and Hayden did in which will be more appropriate talking about while sitting around the campfire. Hayden and Kyle enjoyed many things together, such as just hanging out with friends, camping and fishing… and then there are those “campfire stories” for later.  With Kendall and Justin, it was important to Hayden to be the Big Brother and he carried that title very proudly.  He loved his little brothers.  Kendall and Justin looked up to Hayden like no other, to them Hayden was just Cool.  As Hayden’s Sister and Brothers got a little older their relationship grew from watching and taking care of them to being more than just sister and brothers……. to being buddies.

Hayden loved his unique, entire family.  In many cases of divided families with step parents and siblings, individuals tend to pick sides and stray away from the others.  In our family, Hayden didn’t drift away from one side or the other.  He loved everyone.  Hayden had special bonds with each of his four parents.  Some things he could only talk to his mom Angelyn about or it may be Scott.  What I saw first hand was with his step mom Wendy.  Wendy never used the word “step”  with Hayden. With Wendy he was just “Hayden, my son”, and “I am Haydens other mom”.  Most importantly that’s how Hayden felt as well.  To Hayden, we were just one big special family.  So many times Hayden would confide with Wendy before talking to Dad.

Friends.  Hayden didn’t just have friends.  He had good friends.  Just look around.  Hayden surrounded himself with friends.  It was important to him to have friends and lots of them.

As for Hayden Evan Sage himself, he stood tall and proud.  He always kept himself looking neat and sharp and looking good.  Like his dad and grandfathers, he was a hands on type of young man, laboring with his hands and skills.  He was so proud of being an electrician.  I will never forget the day he got his electrician’s coat with his name on it from the college, WOW he was proud, he couldn’t wait to tell me about it.

This is proud Dad talking about Hayden proudly carrying the Sage Name, but there was more to Hayden then just being a Sage.  Hayden was equally proud of his mother’s name and his Papa and Grammy who he was very very close to. My words cannot do justice or come close to how Hayden felt about his Mothers family and his Papa and Grammy, Uncles and Aunts and cousins, there was a special bond all its own.

We all love you Hayden,  You are sealed in our Hearts forever.

Love Dad
